Post Secondary Education

Postsecondary Education Programs

There are many options when it comes to postsecondary education, including community college, 2-year college, or 4-year college/university programs. Each option offers a variety of opportunities for students to gain knowledge and skills needed to prepare for careers. Additionally, there are disability-related services available in many postsecondary education programs. While the supports and services will look different from those provided in high school, students should seek out the supports they need.

Depending on the students’ career goals, a postsecondary education program may be an ideal option or a requirement to secure a job in their desired field. It is important to help students explore the necessary training requirements for the career they hope to pursue. Adults can help students explore:

  • What career options are most aligned with the students’ interests, strengths, and preferences?
  • Do these careers require specific degrees or certifications?
  • What are priority areas the students should consider (i.e., location, services available, peer supports)?
  • In what skill areas might the students need to improve to be successful in a postsecondary education program and in the desired career?
